Hittin’ the Books: AFAA Primary Group Fitness Certification

**Update: I PASSED!***

So, I’ve been a little MIA the past few days.  I was busy hittin’ the books.

IMG_0268

I’ve been preparing to try and get my AFAA Primary Group Fitness Certification.  As you know, I already am a Licensed Zumba Instructor, but most gyms and companies require a Primary Group Fitness Certification from an organization like AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) or ACE (American Council on Exercise).  Primary Group Fitness training helps you to be prepared for all of the aspects of teaching a fitness class like Zumba or Step.  Some of the things you learn in the process of working towards Group Fitness Certification are:

  • all of the major muscle groups in the body and what exercises and stretches are good for those muscles
  • how to safely put together a class (warm-up, body of exercise, and cool down) so that everyone gets a good workout but stays safe and healthy
  • how to encourage different types of participants
  • how to help participants with specific needs, such as pregnancy, diabetes, or arthritis

There was a LOT to learn!

Technically, you need about a month to get ready for AFAA, but I tried to cram it into about 2-3 weeks.  I started studying over a month ago, but once school started, it threw off my schedule.  I slacked off a little, but over the past week and a half, I really intensified my studying.  Here’s hoping that I passed!  We’ll know in 6-8 weeks!

One thing that I was VERY happy about was that the trainers went over a LOT of the study guide.  That was VERY helpful.  They’ll point out a lot of the things that you really need to know for the written test.  If there are items that are really important, they’ll make sure you understand them.

Are you thinking of trying for your Primary Group Fitness Certification?  Wondering how to prepare?  Hopefully these tips will help you.

Practical Exam:

The practical exam is done as a group, for the most part.  Before lunch, you will practice this entire process.  There will be no surprises.  The actual practical test will be after lunch.  If your workshop is a big workshop (mine had more than 120 people!) then they will probably break you into smaller groups.  We had 3 groups of 40 people.

First, you’ll do a cardiorespiratory practical.  Your whole group will be asked to show a warm-up, body of exercise, and cool down.  You’ll have about 2-3 minutes to show warm ups (and you only have to show 3 exercises!).  Then they’ll say “Now, move into higher-intensity work.”  You’ll change over to higher-intensity moves and continue to do those for about 4 minutes.  Then they’ll say, “Please begin to lower your intensity.”  You’ll have 1 minute to bring your heart rate down.  Don’t be nervous.  Choose 3 warm-up exercises that you could do over and over, like marching, step-touch, and grapevines.  You can do them over and over.  Then choose 4-5 exercises for the higher-intensity.  You could do low jacks, then jumping jacks.  I also did a higher-intensity grapevine with arm movements.  There are tons of options.  For the cool down, I went back and did my 3 warm-up moves again in reverse order (grapevine, step-touch, and finally marching) to cool down.

Next, you’ll be asked to demo exercises and stretches for each muscle.  This is also done in the group.  They will say, “show an exercise for the bicep or tricep.”  You can do something like a bicep curl.  They they will say, “Please show another exercise for a bicep or tricep.”  You might show a tricep kickback.  Then you’ll hear, “Please show one stretch for a bicep or tricep.”  So then you show your stretch.  Then you’ll move to the next muscle group.

Finally, you’ll do your individual presentation.  You will select one move—either a strength or a cardio move—and demonstrate it at three levels.  I teach Zumba, so I demonstrated a salsa.  I started at a regular side salsa.  Then I said, “Now, if this is too complicated, you can do this.”  And then I showed a broken down version of the move—a simple side-to-side tap.  I then showed how to add arms to the regular salsa move to make it more complex.  Lots of people showed squats, lunges, push-ups, planks, and crunches.  Pick a move you are comfortable with—that you’ve preferable demonstrated in a class setting.  Smile and have fun with it.

Written Exam:

You should do the entire study guide that you get from AFAA.  This is the BEST thing you can do to prepare yourself.  There were some people who came to our workshop and had not even started the study guide.  Even though they go over a lot of the information at AFAA, I cannot imagine going in without having done any prep work!  I would spend a LOT of time learning the muscle groups and the names of the muscles.  One thing that you should also pay close attention to is the type of movement done by different joints.  For example: When you do a bicep curl and work your bicep, your elbow is doing elbow flexion.  There are a lot of test questions pertaining to this.  PLUS, you will need this information for the practical test.  The written exam is 100 multiple choice questions.  It is the very last thing that you will do at the workshop.  You have an hour to complete the test.  The test isn’t hard if you have studied, I promise.  The questions aren’t tricky.  If you’ve studied and prepared, you can relax.

What to Bring:

Your workshop will most likely be in a large gym.  I would bring something to sit on—other wise you’ll be sitting on a hard gym floor.  If you have one of those little tailgate chairs or cushions, that would be a great thing to bring.  Or a yoga mat would be great, too.  I brought my lunch so I could use that time to study.  Some of the AFAA instructors will be there to help you or answer questions you might have.  Bring number two pencils and a pen to take notes.  Also—a water bottle!

So now I just have to wait 6-8 weeks to find out how I did!  Here’s hoping I passed!

Dixie-Style Dining: Mimi’s Christmas Breakfast

Happy Labor Day!  I know lots of people celebrated today by cooking (and eating!) barbecue.  And I did eat BBQ at lunch today.  But my special meal of today was breakfast.  If you’ve been reading for a while, then you know I have a thing for breakfast and I also love eggs, no matter the meal!  So I decided that a Monday off of work was special enough to celebrate with Mimi’s Christmas Breakfast!

IMG_0322

This breakfast is so special to all of our family.  Every Christmas morning, for as long as I can remember, my grandmother made this for us.  We would all wake up and spend the first part of the morning playing with all the surprises that Santa brought us.  Before we started the family gift exchange, we all would sit down at my grandparents’ dining room table and enjoy this breakfast casserole.  It was the only time during the year that we had it, so it made it extra special.

IMG_0317

A few years ago, we were visiting my grandparents, and I went through my grandmother’s recipe box and copied down this recipe.  I’ve made it for friends and family on my own, and it is always a raving success.  It is definitely the best breakfast casserole that I have ever had… and you know I have sampled lots of egg dishes!

This breakfast is called Mimi’s Christmas Breakfast, because this recipe was passed to my grandmother by one of her friend’s daughters: Mimi.  I recently saw Mimi on our trip to Philadelphia and I asked her if she still makes this breakfast dish.  She replied, “I made it last week!”

I hope you enjoy this casserole.  Even though it’s special enough for holidays, it’s also the best cure for a drab Monday morning and reheats well in the microwave, too!  Take a piece to work and enjoy it with coffee as you’re checking emails in the morning. :)

Mimi’s Christmas Breakfast

The original recipe serves about 8 people, so I have reduced the size of the recipe to make it serve about 4 people.  My grandmother used to fry the bacon and then crumble it for the top.  I have taken a shortcut and use the bagged real bacon pieces.  I think it works great and did not change the flavor.  Another bonus of this recipe is the fact that you can make it the night before and the next morning just pop it in the oven!

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 slices of bread (she calls for white, but I used whole wheat and it works fine) with crusts removed
  • 2-3 oz. shredded Monterrey Jack cheese
  • 2-3 oz. shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/4 cup skim milk
  • 1.5 –2 oz of Crumbled Bacon Pieces (found in a bag on the salad aisle—NOT the fake orange bacon bits—real crumbled bacon)

Preparation:

Spray a 9 by 9 baking dish with nonstick spray.  Cover the bottom of the dish with the bread slices.  Spread the cheeses evenly over the bread.  Mix the eggs and the milk well.  Pour slowly and evenly over the bread and cheese.  Sprinkle the bacon pieces evenly over the top.  Refrigerate overnight.  In the morning, bake at 35- degrees for 45-60 minutes, or until cooked through and “fluffy.”  (The top will rise.)  Serve hot with hot coffee!

Can you look at this picture and not drool?  The bacon and melty cheese is heavenly.

Happy Labor Day!

Labor Day/Birthday Pool Party

Hooray for Labor Day and no work on a Monday!  Are you on vacation today?  I know there are probably a few people out there who have to work today.  I’m sorry!  I wish you were at home like me.  We haven’t decided what we’re going to do with our extra day… but I have a feeling it is going to include cleaning and organizing.  This house is in a state of disorganization and has been for the past few weeks.  I was hoping for a super-cloudy and rainy day because then I would not be depressed about being stuck inside.  But so far… it ain’t raining, people.

We started yesterday off with  church followed by lunch at Panera Bread.  Have any of you tried the Chopped Chicken Cobb  Salad?  It is my new favorite item on the menu.  This was my third time ordering this.  Today I got a 1/2 salad with Black Bean Soup.

After lunch, it was time to prep for a fun afternoon with friends.

Can you guess what I was making?  My sister Adrienne’s Veggie Couscous Salad!  Have you tried this?  It’s so easy to make and it’s perfect if you’re going to a picnic or barbecue.  You can serve it hot or cold. I’m starting to prefer it cold!

In the mix:

  • 2 boxes of Far East Couscous (Roasted Garlic and Olive Oil flavor)
  • grape tomatoes
  • fresh garlic
  • green and yellow onion
  • orange pepper
  • cucumber
  • fresh basil

Why was I making this salad?  Well, yesterday was my friend Jenn’s birthday!

P4: Periwinkle, Park, Pool, and Potatoes

Happy Saturday!  Today has been a fabulous Saturday here at the Confessions house.  We decided to start with a trip to Old Town Rock Hill.  (FYI, for those of you who aren’t local, Old Town is our downtown area!)  We couldn’t decide what we wanted for breakfast, but we ended up at the Periwinkle Cafe and Bakery.  I’ve been wanting to try it out for a while.  I’ve been here before when it was Rock Hill Roasting Company, but haven’t been inside since it changed to Periwinkle.

IMG_0148

It ended up being a great choice!  I started with coffee—Autumn Spice!  DELICIOUS!  Loved this flavor.  It didn’t even need creamer, it was that flavorful!

IMG_0156

I decided on a yogurt parfait.  Ryan opted for a breakfast sandwich.  Sadie wasn’t very hungry and just enjoyed her juice.

Afterwards, we hit up a nearby park that has been redone and is fabulous!

I cannot believe that it is already Labor Day weekend.  That means that most pools are getting their last weekend of use!  So sad.  We decided we wanted to head to the pool today to enjoy the sunny weather and relax.

It was such a great day.  We thought about eating out, but decided to continue with our outdoorsy day and grilled out instead.  I had salmon in the freezer, but I couldn’t decide on a side dish.  I had potatoes, and I thought about making oven-fried potatoes, but then I thought… why not grill them?  I’ve never grilled potatoes, so I Googled it and got this recipe from Paula Deen.

IMG_0237

This recipe was super-simple and pretty quick!  I only made one change—I didn’t use the House Seasoning.  I used this blend that I’ve been meaning to try.

IMG_0232

IMG_0231

It was on sale for 50 cents a few weeks ago and I thought, “What the heck?  I’ll try it.”  It was perfect on these potatoes!  VERY flavorful!  I think it would be great on all sorts of meat!  So glad I have this in my pantry!

IMG_0235

IMG_0244

The potatoes really were the star of this meal—maybe it was the butter… maybe it was just the flavor from grilling.  But we’ll definitely do this again!

Hope you all are having a wonderful holiday weekend!

Diddo/Fate and Intense Negotiations

Tonight, the husband and I went on a date.  Well, sort-of.  Is it still a date when you bring your three-year old?  I’m not sure… I was craving Sushi and honestly, I really would have liked to go somewhere in the QC, like maybe Cowfish.  But with the little one, it just really wasn’t a great night to do that.  So we went to The Red Bowl instead.

I like The Red Bowl because they make their sushi there and they actually do have a really good variety.

It started out ok.  We admired the fountain outside.  We got a great table and didn’t have to wait at all.  And Sadie was enjoying practicing her S’s.

IMG_0124

Our server took our drink orders.  That’s about where things started going a different direction.  First, she brought Sadie her water in a big frosty mug.  This would probably be ok except for anyone but our child, who absolutely insists on picking up the cup and holding it.

Spill # 1 occurs.

This is the exact moment the server comes back to take our order.  She leaves to get us a to-go cup with lid.  In the meantime, I describe some of the kids’ menu items to Sadie.

“How about chicken nuggets?”

“NO!  I DON’T want NUGGETS!”

“Would you like rice or noodles?”

“I DON’T want ANYthing!”

This would be the exact moment the server comes back again to take our order.  I’m sure I can just about guess what she was thinking.

On to the food.  Dinner was delicious.

IMG_0126

IMG_0128

IMG_0129

IMG_0130

I decided on a Crazy Roll and a California Roll, with Salted Edamame.  The food was fabulous.  And actually, Sadie did eat some of her food.  I am trying to order different sushi items and be a little more adventurous that always getting the Philadelphia Roll and the California Roll every time.  The Crazy Roll was my adventurous choice. :)  Also, have I mentioned that my extremely picky 3-year-old LOVES eating Edamame out of the shell???

In between bites, there was very romantic conversation such as…

“Honey, can I make a deal with you?  If you’ll get up early tomorrow, I’ll get up Sunday and Monday.”

“No way, I got up early both days LAST weekend.”

Now that’s real romance.  Intense negotiations.

Afterwards, we said goodbye to the turtle in the fountain and left a good tip for our server, just in case she had to clean up all the spilled rice and headed home before the dark skies opened up on us.  The wind sure was whipping our hair around.

Reading this back… I’m thinking I am going to have to call this something other than a “date.”

Family+Date=Fate?

Date+Kiddo=Diddo?

Even though it was a little nuts and I had to repeat the phrase “Get up off the floor and sit in the seat” more than once… it was still a fun dinner out and at least we can laugh about it!

(Oh and in case you were wondering about the negotiations… I made a deal.  I traded the hubby bath, books, and bed for getting up early tomorrow.  Looks like I’m gonna need some coffee in the morning.)
